Andrew Wenthe was a 29 year old, first-time candidate running against a well-known Republican incumbent, David Lalk. This northeastern Iowa district is made up of small towns and vast acres of farmland. Lalk survived a spirited challenge two years earlier by attacking the Democratic nominee, successfully painting him as a liberal who did not share the values of this rural community.
This piece began the mail series by establishing Wenthe’s deep roots in northeastern Iowa, and his family’s long tradition of farming. Once this piece reached households, it was must harder for Lalk to attack us on values issues. We sent several more mailings, drawing sharp contrast between the candidates. Wenthe defeated Lalk in this Republican leaning district by 56% to 44%.
