Governor Corzine faced many obstacles in his 2009 bid for reelection. While AFSCME members were very aware of the Governor’s record, they knew far less about Chris Christie’s extreme positions.

While health care issues have been politically difficult for Democrats over the past three years, this was an instance where the Republican candidate had gone too far. Christie had come out in favor of legislation that would deregulate health plans in New Jersey, removing requirements that they cover many routine medical needs.

This piece targeted 33,186 AFSCME members and retirees statewide. According to our organizers, this provocative cover headline and image got members’ attention, leading them to engage with the piece and learn critical information about Christie.
